How do customers find a plumber now?
Most people still start with Google, and the map results and reviews do a lot of the work. Some now also ask AI tools to summarise options or explain what to look for. Google says its AI features, such as AI Overviews and AI Mode, follow the same foundational SEO practices as regular Search.
So this is not either/or. Strong local SEO and a clear website help in both places.
Emergency jobs and planned jobs are different
What to check on your own site
- Is every core service (blocked drains, hot water, gas fitting, leak repairs) explained on its own page in plain words?
- Are your suburbs and service area stated clearly?
- Do your business name, address and phone number match everywhere they appear?
- Is your Google Business Profile complete, accurate and kept current?
- Can a visitor call or request a quote in one tap on a phone?
I covered the profile side in more detail in how to optimise your Google Business Profile for local SEO, and the map side in why a Sydney business might not show on Google Maps.
Why you can rank on Google and still be missing in AI
Is it worth paying for AI SEO as a plumber?
Judge it by jobs, not mentions. Ask any provider how they will connect their work to calls, quote requests and the kinds of jobs you want. Be wary of anyone promising rankings or guaranteed AI recommendations. And if your website is thin or your phone number is hard to find, fix that first.
